Route The path of the Arkansas River was already set when the granite uplift that would eventually form the Rocky Mountains began. About 3 million years ago as the mountains began to rise from the surrounding plains, the Arkansas River—then only a small stream—began to wear away at the stone it flowed across.
Scientists estimate that the mountains surrounding the canyon rose at a rate of approximately one foot every years. Over the millenniathis small stream grew, cutting a deep channel for itself through the surrounding granite.
The gorge's peculiar shape, contrasted to broad canyons such as the Grand Canyoncan be attributed to this long, direct erosion through hard rock. Before European settlement, Native Americans of the Ute people wintered in Royal Gorge for its protection from wind and relatively mild climate. Colorado's Rocky Mountain region fell under Spanish claims, and conquistador expeditions of the 17th century or fur traders may have seen Royal Gorge in their traversal of the area.
The first recorded instance of a European arrival, however, is the Pike Expedition of Zebulon Pike 's group built a crude shelter in the gorge and explored the area, descending on horseback over the frozen Arkansas River. Both railroads thus took to fighting the " Royal Gorge Railroad War ", two years of essentially low-level guerrilla warfare between the two companies. Federal intervention prompted the so-called "Treaty of Boston" to end the struggle.
In the s Royal Gorge was used as a passenger route for transcontinental rail travel. As many as four trains per day went through the gorge, though in time the establishment of alternate routes through the mountains made the Royal Gorge fall from favor for transcontinental use, and passenger train service on the main line was discontinued in A sightseeing train now follows the route through the gorge.
In Guy U. Royal Gorge Park was then created. The bridge is the centerpiece of Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, an amusement park with rides and attractions on both sides of the gorge. The land and bridge are owned by the city and leased to a Dallas -based company called the Royal Gorge Bridge Company which has held the leasing rights since Another Dallas-based company called Leisure and Recreational Concepts was hired by the Royal Gorge Bridge Company in to handle daily operations of the park.
Inportions of the film Big House, U. On June 11,a wildfire broke out near the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park which ultimately destroyed 48 of 52 buildings in the park on both sides of the gorge. The national park itself contains the deepest and most dramatic section of the canyon, but the canyon continues upstream into Curecanti National Recreation Area and downstream into Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area.
The canyon's name owes itself to the fact that parts of the gorge only receive 33 minutes of sunlight a day, according to Images of America: The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. In the book, author Duane Vandenbusche states, "Several canyons of the American West are longer and some are deeper, but none combines the depth, sheerness, narrowness, darkness, and dread of the Black Canyon. The Gunnison River drops an average of 34 feet per mile 6. By comparison, the Colorado River drops an average of 7.
As a result, the canyon is often shrouded in shadow, causing the rocky walls to appear black. The extreme steepness and depth of the Black Canyon formed as the result of several geologic processes acting together.

The Gunnison River is primarily responsible for carving the canyon, though several other geologic events had to occur in order to form the canyon as it is seen today. The Precambrian gneiss and schist that make up the majority of the steep walls of the Black Canyon formed 1.
The lighter-colored pegmatite dikes that can be seen crosscutting the basement rocks formed later during this same period. The entire area underwent uplift during the Laramide orogeny between 70 and 40 million years ago which was also part of the Gunnison Uplift. This raised the Precambrian gneiss and schist that makes up the canyon walls.
During the Tertiary from 26 to 35 million years ago large episodes of volcanism occurred in the area immediately surrounding the present day Black Canyon. The modern Gunnison River set its course 15 million years ago as the run-off from the nearby La Sal and West Elk Mountains and the Sawatch Range began carving through the relatively soft volcanic deposits. With the Gunnison River's course set, a broad uplift in the area 2 to 3 million years ago caused the river to cut through the softer volcanic deposits.
Eventually the river reached the Precambrian rocks of the Gunnison Uplift. Since the river was unable to change its course, it began scouring through the extremely hard metamorphic rocks of the Gunnison Uplift.Royal Gorge Recap - Visiting America's Bridge in Cañon City
The river's flow was much larger than currently, with much higher levels of turbidity. The extreme hardness of the metamorphic rock along with the relative quickness with which the river carved through them created the steep walls that can be seen today.
A number of feeder canyons running into the Black Canyon slope in the wrong direction for water to flow into the canyon. It is believed that less-entrenched streams in the region shifted to a more north-flowing drainage pattern in response to a change in the tilt of the surrounding terrain. The west-flowing Gunnison, however, was essentially trapped in the hard Precambrian rock of the Black Canyon and could not change its course.
The Ute Indians had known the canyon to exist for a long time before the first Europeans saw it. They referred to the river as "much rocks, big water," and are known to have avoided the canyon out of superstition.Winter Covid Guide. Classic XC. Conditions Report. Season Passes. Last updated: October 22, I've been told that with the lower water level at that time, the Royal Gorge rapids will be more like a level IV, but it still makes me a little nervous so I'd appreciate any helpful advice if anyone's been there that time of year.
We just went on the Royal Gorge trip a couple weeks ago, and the water level was already at the high end of low flow, and by the end of August it will almost certainly be even lower.
Unless you have younger children I would highly recommend the Gorge trip, unless you're just looking for more of a float. The scenery is great either way, but I just don't think Bighorn will be very exciting at all around that time. This post has been removed at the author's request. The author may repost if desired.
